The Great Outdoor Picnic Celebrates the Outdoors, Healthy Recreation and Appreciation for Nature

State College, PA — Saturday, June 26 will mark the 6th annual Great Outdoor Picnic sponsored by State College-based Wildlife for Everyone Foundation (WFEF). The event, held on the grounds of Penn’s Cave and Wildlife Park, will he held rain or shine from 11am – 4pm. In keeping with the spirit of June’s designation as Get Outdoors Month, the Great Outdoor Picnic introduces youth to healthy, active outdoor fun. A myriad of educational, interactive and hands-on activities await those who attend.

Kids and adults alike can try their hand at fly casting, archery or B B gun shooting, under the guidance of experienced personnel from the PA Game and Fish and Boat Commissions. The Keystone Trails Association will address hiking and backpacking equipment and important first aid. A community health nurse will share information about ticks and mosquitos and how to prevent Lyme disease and West Nile virus while active in the outdoors.

An appreciation for nature will be highlighted with exhibits on the functions of wetlands, the benefit of pollinators and the importance of PA trees, presented in an interactive display brought to you by the Department of Agriculture’s WoodMobile. A reptile display will offer visitors a chance to hold native turtles, reptiles and snakes and learn about their habits. Penn ‘s Cave and Wildlife Park will have young wolf pups on display with their handlers to answer questions about care and lifestyle. Fun activities include the opportunity to build a bluebird nesting box, Hover Ball Archery and Laser Shot games that test accuracy and agility. Demonstrations include a search and rescue dog simulation, chainsaw carving, and a legendary long bow display.

A family ticket price of $100 admits 2 adults and unlimited number of youth aged 17 and under. In addition to the activities and exhibits, ticketholders and their registered party receive an old-fashioned picnic lunch, reduced admission to the Penn’s Cave boat tour and one adult entry into a 71-prize raffle of quality outdoor equipment and gear including an electric bike, kayak, camping gear, fishing tackle and rods, assorted guns and bows, lawn games, a $5,000 grand prize and more. Additional fundraisers are offered throughout the day to raise money for the Wildlife for Everyone’s mission to promote wildlife conservation and education. The Wildlife for Everyone Foundation was established in 2004 to provide all wildlife enthusiasts with a way to show their commitment through much-needed financial support for wildlife conservation efforts and education. Since its inception, the Foundation has supported projects including wildlife and wetland habitat improvements, creek and lake restorations, the Seedlings for Schools and Pollinator Garden programs and student educational opportunities. A fully accessible, ADA-compliant wetlands area that will provide residents of central Pennsylvania with an outdoor learning space and nature observatory is planned for groundbreaking in late 2021.
