Wildlife for Everyone Endowment Foundation Continues on State Game Lands 93
With the removal of a building earlier this year, a Wildlife For Everyone Endowment Foundation partnership has continued to gather acreage for State Game Lands 93, which provides viewscape protection for the Flight 93 Memorial in Somerset County. The memorial and the game lands are dedicated to the memory of the 40 passengers and crew of Flight 93, who prevented terrorists from reaching their intended destination with the hijacked plane on Sept. 11, 2001.
Project partner Waste Management provided the equipment and manpower from its Shade Landfill, near Cairnbrook, to remove the buildings and backfill the foundation with about 80 tons of soil material to begin restoring the additional acreage to a wild state. The latest work increases the acreage of SGL 93 to about 700, while the removal of the building decreases the no-hunting/no-trapping, safety zone incursion area on the game lands.
About 2.5 miles from the Flight 93 Memorial, SGL 93 helps to maintain a dignified entrance to the memorial uncluttered by inappropriate development and the viewscape from the Memorial. The new game land also protects land that was in the flight path of Flight 93. WFEEF helped to assemble the acreage to create SGL 93, including some critical wetlands, through land donations from Waste Management to WFEEF, which the foundation then donated to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
WFEEF was established to conserve the birds and mammals of Pennsylvania and the ecosystems in which they live. The principal beneficiary of the foundation is the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
A wetland within SGL 93 has been dedicated in memory of the late Richard Guadagno, a wildlife refuge manager from California who was one of the 40 passengers on the plane.
Other organizations that helped with the development of SGL 93 are ORD Sewer Authority, The Conservation Fund, CONSOL Energy and Iberdrola Renewables, Inc. The commission has been purchasing and accepting land donations for state game lands since 1920. The SGL system contains more than 1.4 million acres.
